Eye to eye with a local galaxy
The galaxy filling the frame on both sides of this slider tool is NGC 2566, a spiral galaxy located in the constellation Puppis.
On the left, a new image that is a combination of data from Webb’s MIRI and NIRCam instruments shows off NGC 2566’s well-defined spiral arms, long central bar and delicate tracery of gas, dust and stars.
The image on the right is an also-new image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, featured this week as part of the ESA/Hubble Picture of the Week series, and shows the galaxy’s star clusters and star-forming regions, bright in visible and ultraviolet light.
